When asked what keeps her driven? Women's Pound for Pound fighter Holly
Holm, simply says she doesn't want to lose again before she hangs up the
gloves.
"I want to remain unbeaten from here on out." says Holm, as she prepares
for this Friday's IBA Jr. Welterweight title fight with Jamie Clampitt
at the Hard Rock Casino & Resort (Albuquerque).
Holm 27-1-3 hasn't tasted defeat since June 2004, in a bout her corner
stopped due to a bad cut over her eye against Rita Turissi, a fight
which Holm was winning up to that point.
Since her loss to Turissi, Holm has never been less then dominate going
20-0-1 since. Holm's lone blemish was a highly disputed draw in the
hometown of Mary Jo Saunders, whom Holm easily handled four months prior
in Albuquerque winning a lopsided decision over Saunders.
In fighting Clampitt, Holm see's it as another challenge to improve each
time out.
"Each fight I try to improve from the previous fight and work on getting
better with certain things I may not have done good before." stated Holm
"I know I can always get better each time out, its what makes me train
hard each fight."
Holm sees Clampitt as a person to take serious and not overlook.
"Jamie is a tough fighter and has beaten some of the same opponents I
have beaten. She always comes to fight and put on a good performance,
but if I follow my game plan it shouldn't matter what plan she has for
me."
Holm who has taken some negative comments from media and opponents for
fighting in her hometown most of her career, wants to set the record
straight that she will fight anyone, anywhere, if they pay her what she
is worth.
"I have heard this time and time again, but the media doesn't put that I
will fight anyone and not just at home, all I ask is that I at least get
paid the same or close to what I make at home."
Holm also wants it known that she recently was offered a fight in
Germany against Cecilia Braekhus for the Welterweight belts Holm
previously held but they offered practically nothing to go there.
"They offered us the fight this past June, but offered us less then 1/4
of what I can make at here, so why would I go there." stated Holm
"I have more to lose and nothing to gain, but at the very least pay me
close to what I make at home."
Braekhus eventually fought and defeated Victoria Cisneros, who Holm
defeated this past December in the infamous walkout bout. Holm was
slated to face Melissa Hernandez who walked out on promoters 15 minutes
before her fight with Holm. Cisneros took the fight on seconds notice at
her chance at Holm.
When asked if she would ever consider fighting Hernandez once and for
all, Holm balked at the fight.
"I feel she had her chance and made a mockery out herself and the sport,
why would I go through the mental and physical preparation for something
like this to happen again, its not worth it."
Traveling and money have never been an issue for Holm, she took a
minimal purse to fight Brenda Laraquente on Fox Sports in 2008 and
Saunders in Rosemont, Illinois for their rematch.
"I fought Laraquenta for practically nothing but it was two weeks after
I fought Miriam Baracke, I was in shape so I figured it would help with
exposure no matter what I got paid, so money isn't an issue but its nice
to have."
Holm says she still has a good 4-5 years in the game before she decides
what she wants to do after she hangs up the gloves.
"I told myself when I was 25 that I have 5 more years, now its 4 years
later and I feel the same way. I'll know when it will be time to
quit, its just that it's not going to anytime soon, I still have the
fire inside that burns."
